COVID-19 in the workplace: this topic has caused quite a stir, headlines and scandals in the last year. For lack of international standards, companies had to decide individually how to protect their employees during the pandemic. Since December 2020, companies can finally rely on a new international guidance document: ISO 45005 provides universally applicable guidelines for safe working during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Governments, regulators and other professional bodies across the world have published guidance on working safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. ISO 45005 complements this information with a single generic set of guidelines. The document can be applied to any organization, regardless of the nature of business, service provision, size or complexity.
What are the advantages of ISO 45005?
By implementing the standard, companies can take effective measures to protect employees and other relevant interested parties from the risks related to COVID-19. In addition, companies can demonstrate that they are using a systematic approach to address the risks associated with COVID-19 and thus enable effective and timely adaptation to the changing situation.
How does the guideline work?
Companies using the ISO 45001 standard can use ISO 45005 to inform their OH&S management system by relating the relevant clauses to the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle. ISO 45005:2020 is not intended to be a step-by-step set of recommendations. It provides a framework in which the PDCA cycle should be repeated, with all parts active at all times, to enable ongoing continual improvement and to ensure the organization responds to changes during the different phases of the pandemic.

Why certification to ISO 45005 makes sense
To be successful in times of COVID-19, companies need to gain and maintain the trust of various parties. The authorities need to be convinced that doing business does not endanger public health. Employees must be able to rely on their workplace being safe and hygienic. Customers need the certainty that they can rely on your company – without health risks or supply chain interruptions. An ISO 45005 certification enables you to demonstrate due diligence and implementation of the necessary precautions.
